South Buffalo Charter School

Buffalo, New York

This project is a new elementary charter school facility for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students. The site is located adjacent to the Buffalo River and the project is participating in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Brownfield Cleanup Program. The effort will revive this vacant Brownfield, located in a residential area of South Buffalo, into a relevant part of the neighborhood fabric. The site plan was developed to mitigate localized environmental site conditions, provide safe interaction of pedestrians and vehicles, conserve land for future use, and to address the local flood plain. The facility itself provides amenities including a library, gymnasium, auditorium and cafeteria which are all organized to allow after-hours access for utilization without providing access to the classrooms. The building was creatively and intelligently designed with simple materials and geometries to create a light filled entrance lobby and durable exterior that is a counterpoint to the natural setting.
